GOLF CART OPERATION ON VILLAGE STREETS
At council meeting on February 23rd, 2017, Village Council approved the use of
golf carts in the Village of Tekonsha. Under MCL257.657a, the Michigan Vehicle Code
authorizes a city/village with a population of fewer than 30,000 to allow, by resolution,
operation of golf carts on its streets.
The statute imposes restrictions on the operation of golf carts within a city/village
including the following but not limited to:
– Operators must be at least 16 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
– Operators must comply with signal requirements set forth in MCL 257.648 (i.e.
using hand signals to signal a turn, etc.).
– Golf carts must be driven as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable,
with a maximum speed limit is 15 mph.
– Golf carts may not be operated from 1/2 hour before sunset to 1/2 hour after
sunrise.
– Golf carts may not be operated on pedestrian sidewalks or on state line trunk
highways (Main Street) except to cross that highway.
In addition to the resolution, Village Council is requiring that all golf carts be registered at
the village office where you will receive a copy of the entire resolution, map of roads and
a sticker for your cart. There is no charge for this registration.
